Nat Wei, Baron Wei

Lord Wei is a social entrepreneur, interested in social reform, a member of the House of Lords and was previously an adviser to the UK Government on their Big Society project.

Lord Wei’s Chinese ancestry can be traced back to a village in Zhuhai, on the southern coast of the Guangdong province. His ancestral home is 2 villages away from that of Sun Yat-sen, whom incidentally, Lord Wei enjoys reading and learning about.

He is fluent in English, has a working knowledge of Chinese Cantonese, French and German. Lord Wei is also currently actively learning Chinese Mandarin from the Confucious Insitute of Business at the London School of Economics.

Jackson Ng 黄精明

Jackson Ng is originally from The Netherlands but has spent the majority of his life living in the United Kingdom, in addition to having lived in Australia, Singapore and The Netherlands.

He is equally fluent in English, Mandarin and Cantonese and has a working knowledge of Dutch.

Jackson works very closely with The Lord Wei of Shoreditch at the House of Lords on various areas such as the British Chinese community, Britain - China related matters and has been involved in the setting up of the All Party Parliamentary Group on East Asian Businesses where he is now also serving as its Parliamentary Liaison Officer in the Houses of Parliament. Along with Lord Wei, he also spends a considerate amount of his time engaging with the British Chinese community and not-for-profit organisations. He is also assisting Lord Wei in co-designing social and civic projects which will look to help the British Chinese community.

Sarah Lu was born in a refugee camp in Lincolnshire, England in 1980. Her parents were Boat People who escaped from Vietnam in 1979. After graduating with a BA (hons) Graphic Design in 2001 from Buckinghamshire University aged 21, she moved to Brighton where she set up her own Graphic Design company - 'Shortlong Graphics' with the help of funding from the Prince's Trust.

Throughout these years Sarah Lu ran several public houses as franchises to raise more funds for her business ideas. In 2005 Shortlong was sold and Sarah Lu left the U.K. to work as a creative in top advertising agencies, Cunning and Naked, both based in New York, USA.

I have a photo of a ramshackle pig shed. It’s a picture of where I was born. Sometimes, searching for other things, I come across it. It’s another world now, so far away it’s like looking the wrong way through a telescope. But it’s where I began.

My parents left rural poverty in Hong Kong for Britain when I was one. My brothers and sisters and I stayed, in the care of a family friend. It was a big change, but not what my parents had hoped. Instead of going to school, we made plastic flowers in a toy factory for the woman they had trusted with our care. I was ten when we joined my parents. I knew one English word when I arrived; ‘tomorrow’.
