Starting at University College London, University of London, Allan Siao Ming Witherick has had both a varied career and education. He was one of the last to receive a full grant, despite which he still had to work every holiday and weekend to be able to pay his way through university even with as much support as his family could provide.
His degree in Physical Sciences covered a wide variety of subjects including Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Psychology, Philosophy, Computer Science, Egyptology, Archaeology, Law and Management.
Whilst there he was also heavily involved in the student union, being awarded Honorary Life Membership of UCL Union and helping to found the UCL branch of ABACUS (Association of British and Chinese University Students).
Other achievements while there included helping to run the Cultural Carnival at Bloomsbury Theatre, being elected University of London Union Anti-Racism Officer as well as other posts and becoming a member of the University of London Council and Senate/Academic Committee.
Work
With a strong work ethic Allan started work with various small jobs from paper rounds to cleaning, through to working in a supermarket. After graduating his focus became the public sector due to his desire to help other people.
Communications Assistant, Hertfordshire Police Authority 2000-2001
Running the public meetings on behalf of the Police Authority and administering their initiative grants scheme he worked across the county of Hertfordshire.
Community Safety Coordinator, St Albans City & District Council, 2001-2002
After less than a year with the Police Authority he was head hunted to St Albans to take on the lead crime and disorder remit. Whilst there he wrote the Community Safety Strategy and Audit as well as a Best Value Review of the service.
Other successes included organizing partnership work with a variety of organisations across the private, charity and public sectors.
Corporate Systems and Research Officer, South Bedfordshire District Council 2003-2009
Leading on consultation activities such as the joint BedsVoice Citizens Panel on behalf of the authority he also provided support for a number of projects ranging from equalities, environment (EMAS) and performance management through to preparing the authorities response to post office closures.
Performance Improvement Officer, Central Bedfordshire Council 2009-current
Turning down the opportunity to be promoted due to political restrictions in local government Allan's work is now more focused on improving performance of the local authority whilst supporting other projects on an ad hoc basis.
Political
Becoming active at a very young age he has held a large number of roles and positions throughout the Liberal Democrat party. This has included representing them overseas with both ELDR (European Liberal Democrats) Party and others.

Outside of his politics Allan has undertaken an extensive range of roles in the past which lead to him being awarded Fellowship of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA) as a Young Leader as part of the International Year of Volunteering. Since then he has continued to be highly active.
International activity
With a range of different hats Allan been active across several continents with everything from speaking and participating through to running events. In particular a lot of this work has been linked to the Liberal Democrats, Young European Movement and JEF (Young European Federalists) as well as pro-democracy and human rights work in Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine (just before they had a revolution!).

Although currently employed and elected, Allan undertakes small projects both paid and unpaid in a variety of areas. This has been as diverse as heading part of a British Council delegation to China, running workshops in Serbia, counting votes in Finland to editing international magazines.
