David Tan
Chinese Liaison Officer (Westminster Council)

David Tan is Westminster Council’s Chinese Liaison Officer and has been working with the council and the community in Chinatown and elsewhere in Westminster since 1990.

In the 1980s, whilst teaching in a secondary school, David Tan became involved with youth and community developments, and spearheaded various projects. Furthering the educational needs of the Chinese community is something that he is especially passionate about.

He has worked to encourage links between UK and the Far East, organising exchanges and cooperation with countries such as China and Malaysia; by taking youths to China for fact-finding and ‘discover your roots’ tours, and promoting and encouraging adult learning in Malaysia by taking English tutors to run workshops in Malaysia.

He is recognised as a leading expert in the UK in Chinese culture, and has been instrumental in serving the needs of the Chinese Community and developing a positive relationship between public authorities such as the Council and the Police Service. His presentations on Chinese culture have developed an understanding of, and sensitivity to the needs of the Chinese community in Britain.

David Tan was the Winner of The 48 Group Club Award for Outstanding Individual Achievement at The Pearl Awards in 2005.
