David read Law at Southampton University (1983-86) before training at Rose Bruford College (1986-89) as an actor. In 1996, he was the first British Chinese to receive an Arts Council bursary to train as a director at the Leicester Haymarket Theatre. He has worked extensively as an actor and writer, and became Artistic Director of Yellow Earth Theatre in 1995 where he has directed for twelve years.
In 2006, he adapted and directed a bilingual China / UK King Lear for the RSC Complete Works festival, the Shanghai International Festival, the UK Arts Festival in Chongqing and UK national tour. In 2005, he adapted and directed a bilingual HK / UK The Nightingale for the Hong Kong Arts Festival and UK national tour.
In 2004, David presented a groundbreaking series on the lives of British Born Chinese for BBC Radio 4 (Beyond The Takeaway). In that year, he won the Windrush Arts Award and YET won the inaugural Pearl Arts Award. In 2006, he became the first Creative Director of Chinatown Arts Space, which produced the sold-out Chinatown Arts Festival 2007: The Circle at the Linbury Theatre, Royal Opera House.
To celebrate the Beijing Olympics in 2008, CAS will produce an innovative UK / China cross-arts exchange festival 5 Circles, in partnership with ROH2, Sadler’s Wells, Asia House, etc. YET will produce a major new UK / China production, Running the Silk Road, for the London Barbican and UK national tour, including Watford Palace, Liverpool Everyman (European Capital of Culture), Newcastle Northern Stage, etc.
David was awarded a Fellowship from Rose Bruford College for services to British theatre in 2007.
