Jason Francis Lau 劉健國 Bsc (hons) IEng MIED MCSD

Designer. Engineer. Film Maker.

Born and raised in Manchester, Jason pursued his dream and ambition to study Product Design Bsc (hons) at Brunel University and he has since been working in the field of design and engineering. He has a vast variety of work experience including web design, graphic design and mechanical design / engineering.

Jason's professional experience include working in San Francisco as a Web Designer at a widely known dotcom, Graphic Designer for high volume print applications in Manchester and most recently as a CAD Designer & Project Engineer in an international renowned engineering consultancy.

Adopting to specialize in mainstream mechanical engineering and design, he has contributed to various large engineering projects in the UK. Worthy of note are his contributions to the renewable energy sector (biomass, gasification, energy from waste, recycling). His technical engineering designs have been erected in the UK's largest biomass power station (Steven's Croft, Lockerbie).

His environmental contributions include Air Quality Assessments for MediaCityUK, which now houses the BBC in Manchester and this was used to determine the environmental effects of biomass flue gases emitted from the site's stack. Jason has also completed detailed technical designs for materials recycling facilities (MRF) and household waste and recycling centres (HWRC).

Professional accreditations include:
  • Incorporated Engineer (registered with the Engineering Council)
  • Member of the Institution of Engineering Designers
  • Member of the Chartered Society of Designers

Jason is a film maker in his spare time and he has recently contributed to the wider community by showcasing his viewpoint on British born Chinese life in his point of view documentary. His film projects aim to break stereotypes and raise awareness of the British Chinese community. Stemming from his experiences of growing up in the 1990s in suburban Manchester, Jason wanted to make a change about how the Chinese are perceived in the UK. Although his film projects are not professionally made, his work has achieved recognition and has been featured / discussed on:

  • Spectrum Radio London
  • Chinatown Arts Space
  • Neehao Magazine

Jason aspires to prompt more British Chinese to make films about their lives with the aim of getting the Chinese community's voice heard and dispelling the hidden minority label. He has since been assisting, advising and helping others with this cause.
