ISOLATION 9
New talent calls the shots
Jo is an award-winning film director and screenwriter who was born in Dagenham, Essex.
Jo currently has a big budget fantasy kids TV series in development with CBBC. Live action/cgi, the series is described as ‘Buffy set in a Chinese spirit world’. It is envisioned that the series, once commissioned, will be shot entirely in China – a first for the BBC.
After studying art at the University of Westminster, Jo went on to work in feature films in production on varying roles until she eventually realized her dream was to write and direct.
While she was working in production, she was profiled in CREATION magazine as a ‘young, driven and fanatically hardworking woman’.
After studying The West Wing, the TV series which Jo swears could double as a masterclass in screenwriting, Jo wrote her first feature script. Her writing was shortly noticed by acclaimed producer Ken Trodd, known for his work with the late Dennis Potter. At 25 years old, Jo wrote and created her first TV series which Trodd was to produce, a Chinese based drama show called DIM SUM which was commissioned by Channel Four.
Last year, Jo wrote and directed two short films, ISOLATION 9 and MONKEY NUT TALES. ISOLATION 9 won the best film award at the Buffalo Black & Asian Short Film Festival and can currently be seen on BBC Film Network.
MONKEY NUT TALES was funded by UK Film Council and Film London as part of their competitive PULSE digital shorts scheme. MONKEY has so far been screened at The London Film Festival, in Shanghai and Beijing. Live action/animation, it was based on her feature film script of the same title.
Both films have been picked up for representation by The British Council.
She is currently showcasing several feature scripts, both here and in LA – including the feature version of MONKEY NUT TALES, and family fantasy BO & THE SPIRIT QUEST, while she works on her new supernatural thriller, BLOODLINES.
Jo is presently a judge on the BBC Writers room’s new development scheme BBC BITES, targeted at finding new British Chinese writers.
In addition to her Western projects, it is one of Jo’s aims to make films that show real representation of the modern Chinese experience whilst combining this with western story-telling techniques. Jo also hopes to encourage more females into the film and TV industry, and especially those from an ethnic minority background.
Jo is 30, a member of BAFTA and repped by The Dench Arnold Agency.
Professional Services
In addition to writing and directing, Jo also teaches workshops on screenwriting and getting into the film industry. She also freelances as a script reader and consultant for private clients, production companies and film studios including John Calley Productions (The Da Vinci Code) and Universal Studios.
If you’d like to discuss any of these services, please send an email to info@visiblechinese.com with her name and your enquiry.
Jo is based in London but is happy to travel for work.

Hi Jo, I watched your film “Isolation 9” and had a read about your interview online by chance this afternoon, which is a quite encouraging experience. With a very sensitive approach to filming, I found the film very moving and I really enjoyed watching it. My name is Yu and I’m from Mainland of China. I have education and work background in Media Production, I currently live in Luton and I am looking for opportunities to further develop my skills in the field. Take a look at my site http://web.mac.com/hahadonkey/iweb/mayu and http://web.mac.com/hahadonkey/iweb/AroundChinaIn80Days which is the biggest independent project I’ve done so far, and there are pictures and video clips about the trip around China you might be interested to see. Any suggestions about getting into the film production industry in the UK will help me in a great deal. Thanks for your time. Yu
