John Gittings

Research Associate, Centre of Chinese Studies, SOAS; Associate, Oxford Research Group.

John Gittings was for many years chief foreign leader-writer and East Asia Editor at The Guardian. In the late 1960s he worked with the Far Eastern Economic Review in Hong Kong. He first reported from China in 1971 during the Cultural Revolution, when he visited with a delegation from the Society for Anglo-Chinese Understanding. A second visit in 1976, during the "April 5th Incident", was followed by regular travel while teaching at the Polytechnic of Central London (where he formed the basis of the Chinese poster collection -- now at the University of Westminster).

He joined The Guardian staff in 1983 and later covered major events such as Tiananmen Square and the Hong Kong handover. He visited Tibet when it was under martial law in 1989, and was there most recently in 2002. In 2000 he opened the newspaper's first mainland China staff bureau in Shanghai. His first book, for Chatham House in 1964, was a study of the Chinese army. His Real China (1996) was based on extensive travel in the central provinces of China. His most recent book is The Changing Face of China: From Mao to Market (OUP, 2005).

John Gittings's website carries a selection of his reports from China, more recent articles, and a "Photos from China" section including pictures, paper cuts and posters from the years 1971-91.

He has recently helped to edit the Oxford International Encyclopedia of Peace (New York, forthcoming) and is preparing a study on the historical perception of peace.
