Kumiko Mendl
Actress
Kumiko was born in Watford to a Japanese mother and a Jewish-German father. She trained at the Jacques Lecoq International Theatre school in Paris.
Since then she has worked as an actress in theatre, for radio,TV, role-playing and for a traveling circus, as well as a teacher and director. ( She has also been movement director for a number of productions including the award winning Magic Fundoshi where she first met YET's Artistic Director, David Tse.)
As one of the founding members of Yellow Earth Theatre, Kumiko has performed in Blue Remembered Hills (dir David Glass), Play to Win (dir David Tse) and co-directed Rashomon. She has been involved in Typhoon as script selector, director and actress.
As joint Outreach Coordinator for Yellow Earth Theatre, Kumiko is responsible for the community outreach and education side of Yellow Earth. Recent and current projects include co-directing a community play with the Thamesmead Chinese Vietnamese community, planning an intergenerational project to be run in Camden by Yellow Earth, running Japanese theatre workshops for The Donmar Warehouse and Mousetrap Foundation and creating a study guide to accompany the Donmar's production of Pacific Overtures.
She also teaches Mask and Physical Theatre on the access course for Clean Break TC (women ex-offenders) and has run numerous workshops and residencies for schools. She is an Assessor for the Arts Council's Artsmark scheme.
