It was a hot, sultry day; the 9th day of the Ninth Moon - the Festival of the Ninth God, incense smoke mingled with roasted meat, temple prayers with the deep resonance of brass gongs; I was five or six, my hand in my grandmother's. The sound of 'cheng, cheng, cheng-cheng' beating out from the stage orchestra; the beautifully painted faces with their glinting costume, high head-dress shimmering with red and gold ; singing that sounded like nothing I had heard before; these other-worldly creatures floating around on that raised area; my eyes transfixed, my fascination transported me into their world of colour, sounds and story from another time and another place -
"What is going on?"
With that question, I was hooked on the opium of theatre...
Years later, swapping suit and tie and briefcase, and stepping out of 'Bank' station for the last time, I went to the Guildhall School of Music and Drama to enter that same world I saw on the 9th day of the 9th moon. Though more Shakespeare than Tang poetry, Chekov than Cao Yu, it nevertheless is my world, my life.
Since leaving drama school, I have been fortunate to have worked with people I loved, in projects and places I enjoyed, but most importantly in work that has enriched me as a human being.
Currently, I am learning the skills of Balinese mask dances. After the first impact of the natural beauty of the island, the real enchantment is the discovery of the fine strands of art, religion, rituals and daily life, finely interwoven into the cultural web of the Balinese people. This research and training is used in the work of Yellow Earth, and I would like to share my passion and training with other theatre practitioners, in bridging cultures and broadening understanding of global diversity.
