Wah-Yin Rixon

Film examiner

Born in Singapore, Wah-Yin grew up in a family where she is the only one not to be an engineer (apart from her mother, who was an extraordinary cook). In 2006, she embarked on a 5-week odyssey through Guangxi in south China with her daughter, Shan - who was studying Chinese in Kunming - to find their ancestral village (see Shan’s pictures at www.flickr.com/photos/s-h-a-n/sets/). She hopes to do something similar with her son, John, one day. But he is a jazz musician and his schedule, like his music, is unpredictable (www.howardpeacockjazz.com).

Wah-Yin watches over 5 hours of film and TV material every weekday to determine their classification as she is a film examiner at the British Board of Film Classification (www.bbfc.co.uk). Whenever possible, she reads, writes, eats, sees and makes pictures, and dreams up schemes related to arts and culture.

During periods of unemployment, Wah-Yin did volunteer work at various Chinese centres to improve her Cantonese but also to advise on housing, benefits and rights.

She used to be the Chair of the British Chinese Artists' Association (now defunct) and is currently a trustee of the Yellow Earth Theatre (www.yellowearth.org). Her law and politics degree from Oxford Polytechnic (now Oxford Brookes University) was useful when she was a senior caseworker handling medical negligence cases at Action for Victims of Medical Accidents (www.avma.org.uk), and at Health Strategy Group, which campaigned for health rights. She cut her political teeth in the combative world of school boardrooms when she was a governor at an Islington school. Her membership of various organisations is her way of supporting them. They include the Royal Academy, Tate Galleries, Institute of Contemporary Arts, British Film Institute, British Academy of Film & Television Arts and Amnesty International.
